Designing an Online Exhibit for Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project

Project by Micah Merryman (2018)

The purpose of this thesis project was to create an online exhibit for Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project. Densho, based in Seattle, WA is an exclusively online archive that digitally preserves and shares the history of Japanese Americans, particularly those incarcerated during World War II, to explore issues of democracy, intolerance, and civil rights. The creation of an online exhibit provided Densho an opportunity to expand access to their online archives through storytelling. The process of exhibit development included five phases: planning, research, design, implementation, and evaluation. The scope of this project encompassed the first three phases of exhibit process with recommendations for implementation and evaluation. Thus, this project provided Densho with an exhibit to share with the public and a methodology to complete future exhibits in-house. The final product of this project was a completed exhibit design portfolio and methodology for future online exhibits. The major limitation of this project was that the research phase of the project took longer than anticipated due primarily to the breadth of Densho鈥檚 archive.
