Dr. Richard G. Ellenbogen, attending neurosurgeon and chief of pediatric neurological surgery at Children鈥檚 Hospital and Regional Medical Center, has been named chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery in the UW School of Medicine. His appointment was effective March 1.
Ellenbogen, who also holds the Theodore S. Roberts Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurological Surgery, has been serving as acting chair. He received his medical degree from Brown University in 1983, and completed his residency in 1989 at Children鈥檚 Hospital Boston and Brigham & Women鈥檚 Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. He previously served as chief of neurosurgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and director of the National Capital Region Residency Program at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He joined the UW in 1997.
Ellenbogen focuses his clinical work in pediatric and adult brain tumors, craniofacial anomalies, trauma, and spine surgery. His current research includes congenital brain anomalies and new treatments for pediatric brain tumors. He will continue his pediatric neurosurgery practice at Children鈥檚 Hospital and he has established his academic and adult clinical offices at Harborview Medical Center.
